Thanks for the encouragement Medieval Shepherd!! I have started enquiring about make up schools and the kind of training they offer, and feel a big surge of excitement at the idea of pursuing that... it might take a while to take the plunge but at least, I know I have other options... and who knows, maybe I will make it big in make up one day ;)

Medieval, I share the same passion!

Alas, I followed another route, a better paying career, and it took me getting laid off a few moths ago to realize that I want to pursue illustration with more of my energy.

So true what you say!

This was the first time I read Adrian Tan's speech and I thought it was both insightful and to the point about how your life would never fit what is average but will be random and unpredictable at best. There were no lofty ideas about what each graduate could go on to help remedy the ailments of the world, unlike Hillary Clinton's speech which sounded just like any other political speech you would hear. The reality is that we cannot all go on to be social workers or work for good causes like NFPs but we can all be mindful of our actions in our life and how they affect those around us and the world as a whole. His point was that we need to make ourselves happy and take a look at our life from within not trying to define it by the appearances we create through the external world.
About the 'being hated' part - it's only natural that those who are daring to go out into uncharted territories in order to follow their dreams would be envied and disliked by those stuck in meaningless existences. It takes a lot of resolve, belief in oneself, and courage to do what you love to do instead of what you think society wants you to do.
And that's were love comes in. Tan defines it as the unconditional love for another human being which requires you to look past many shortfalls and little imperfections in order to find the hidden beauty that lies in each and everyone. It is indeed a lot of work but every bit of it is worth it because in the process you understand so much more. In the end we make most decisions in our life out of either love or fear. Tan encourages us to live fearlessly, and love unconditionally without worrying about what is defined as average and whether we fit in the 'mold'.

LostInTranslation.......Passion is the "ultimate comfort" It is sad to watch young enthusiastic energetic college grads.... compelled to choose the "which pays best" careers, without realizing that without passion, life has no expectancy. I seem instances where many have taking the corrective path and follow the passion. Yes. Its hard and its all dependent on where you stand in your life. Unfortunately to many with the choice of "what pays best" career there comes the "you must pay excessively huge" bill for that choice.

Like any task in hand, finding a passion and pursuing it is a matter of transition. Rags to Riches - Riches to Rags. are you willing to Sacrifice the Financial comfort for the ultimate comfort? are you willing to give your riches for rags again? are you will to travel into the unknown / uncertainty? I believe in Passion there is always success. It may take more time that you can imagine, but once you cross that point you will look back and remember that you made the right choice.

As for me the choice has always been clear, clear since the day I was born when i could stop drawing / when rather than watching silly cartoons hours and hours I would spend it drawing. That was my passion, that is my passion and I've never let it go. whether I make a million or just a few dollars my passion stays. Money last for as you can keep it, Passion it last forever and it never leaves you.

My recommendation to you is find your Passion, narrow it and fulfill it. You will not regret it.

Best of Luck

Congratulations to the new Graduate indeed....!!! I remember my own graduation time... it was a happy and proud moment, but also the feeling to leave a part of my life behind...
I had read this speech before, but today, the current situation I am in gave it a new meaning...
I wish I could find the courage to stop "working" in order to pursue a passion, but find it very difficult to give up on the financial comfort and security that my job gives me.
Any thoughts from the readers of the blog???
